We don't want to put you off crawling into bed & catching zzz's tonight but it's time to get real. You may think you know your mattress better than anyone. I mean you do spend 6-8 hours a night on it. But how well do you really know it? Do you know what could be lurking between your luxe linen sheets?
Well, we hate to break it to ya. But it's probably a little less pleasant than you think. Here's the thing...humans shed almost a million skin cells over a 24 hour period. A good portion of that 24 hours is spent in bed which means it's collecting right beneath you. To get even grosser, in one year you will lose 3.6 kilograms of dead skin. That's 3.6 kilograms of the old you, just chilling in your bed, on your window sills and under the couch. And don't forget, if you sleep with a partner or a furry companion that figure pretty much doubles.
You know what else happens? We sweat. Yep, those hot Summer nights & snuggles cause even more grossness. Your mattress even puts on weight because of it *dry retch*
So with dead skin, sweat and oil, you know what comes next? The mites! Difficult to see with the naked eye, diminutive size means they can penetrate through most sheets to live out their entire life cycles in your bed. So maybe you aren't sleeping alone after all?
Just as you should replace your pillows regularly, so too should you eventually replace your mattress. The National Sleep Foundation recommends every 7-10 years. The mixture of sweat, oil and bacteria will eventually seep through and discolour those crisp white linens & may also become a detriment to your health and well-being.
So perhaps it's time for a little Spring upgrade? We think so.
